There are major changes to water heaters manufactured after April 16, 2015.
Poe Air would like to make our customers aware of the coming changes and how it may impact them. We do not do water heater repair or replacement. You will need to contact your plumber for that. We specialize in air conditioning and heating repair and service.
We are generally in favor of high efficiency air conditioning or other appliances.
The biggest issue I wanted to make people aware of with the water heater changes are:
- The prices will increase
- The newer water heaters will be larger
- The newer water heaters may not fit in your current space
- The newer water heaters may not fit through current accesses. (attic hatches etc.)
The new water heaters that are under 55 gallons are likely to be 2-3 inches taller and 2-3 inches wider.
The new water heaters that are over 55 gallons or larger will have more dramatic changes. These systems will probably cost Significantly more to replace and will be requiring hybrid heat pump/electric models for electric units and condensing models for gas systems. Either of these systems may be extremely difficult to retrofit into an existing location. It will be much more expensive. You may need to consider replacing a 55+gallon water heater with 2 smaller ones or go with a tankless water heater.
The normal water heaters manufactured before April 16, 2015 will still be available until supplies are exhausted.
If your water heater is approaching 10 years or older you should find out if the ones available after the old ones are gone will be a fit for you. If they are not feasible for your situation you may consider acting now.
